Base Theory

Base theory in makeup refers to the techniques and products used to create a smooth, even, and flawless canvas for the rest of your makeup. The base forms the foundation of your makeup look and is crucial for achieving a polished and long-lasting finish.

  1. 1. Skin Preparation

    Cleansing

    • Purpose: Removes dirt, oil, and impurities to ensure a clean surface for makeup application.
    • Products: Use a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type (gel, cream, or micellar water).

    Exfoliation

    • Purpose: Removes dead skin cells and smooths the skin’s texture.
    • Frequency: Exfoliate 1-2 times a week, depending on your skin type and the exfoliant used.

    Moisturizing

    • Purpose: Hydrates the skin and creates a smooth base for makeup.
    • Products: Choose a moisturizer suitable for your skin type (lightweight for oily skin, rich for dry skin).

    Priming

    • Purpose: Prepares the skin for foundation, helps to minimize pores, control oil, and enhance the longevity of makeup.
    • Types of Primers:
      • Hydrating: Adds moisture and glow, ideal for dry skin.
      • Pore-Filling: Smooths out pores and fine lines, good for oily or combination skin.
      • Mattifying: Controls shine and oil, suitable for oily skin types.

    2. Foundation

    Choosing the Right Foundation

    • Coverage: Ranges from sheer to full. Choose based on the level of coverage you desire.
    • Finish: Includes matte, dewy, or satin finishes. Match the finish to your skin type and preference.
    • Shade Matching: Match the foundation to your neck or chest for the most natural look. Test shades in natural light to ensure a good match.

    Application Techniques

    • Brush: Provides a smooth and even finish. Use a foundation brush to blend foundation into the skin.
    • Sponge: A damp beauty sponge offers a flawless, airbrushed finish and is great for blending.
    • Fingers: Can be used for a more natural, sheer application. Warm the product between your fingers before applying.

3. Concealer

Purpose

  • Brightening: Used under the eyes to counteract dark circles and brighten the area.
  • Spot Concealing: Covers blemishes, redness, and other imperfections.

Application

  • Under Eyes: Apply in a triangular shape and blend well to brighten and lift the area.
  • Blemishes: Use a small brush or your fingertip to apply concealer directly on blemishes and blend the edges.

4. Setting the Base

Powder

  • Types: Includes translucent powders, pressed powders, and loose powders.
  • Purpose: Sets foundation and concealer, controls shine, and helps to achieve a smooth finish.

Application

  • Translucent Powder: Apply with a fluffy brush or powder puff to set the makeup without adding extra color.
  • Baking: Apply a generous amount of powder and let it sit for a few minutes before dusting off. This technique helps to set the concealer and highlight areas.

5. Contouring and Highlighting

Contouring

  • Purpose: Adds dimension and defines the face by creating shadows.
  • Products: Use contour powders or creams that are a few shades darker than your skin tone.
  • Application: Apply to areas you want to recede, such as the sides of the nose, under the cheekbones, and along the jawline.

Highlighting

  • Purpose: Accentuates high points of the face to add a glow and bring features forward.
  • Products: Choose highlighters in cream, powder, or liquid form.
  • Application: Apply to the tops of the cheekbones, brow bones, bridge of the nose, and cupid’s bow for a radiant finish.
